Tourist Information of Tacna, Peru

There is no public transportation to visit the suburbs of Tacna. But if you have a car or participate optional tours, you can visit some places which have tourist attractions close to the city of Tacna.
If you have time, I recommend you to visit Tarata, which has great Inca-trail and the scenery of terraced farms. And some wineries are waiting you.

Museum of Peañas
El Museo de Peañas
This museum opened to show remains of old graves with stone. 56 graves which depth are from 80cm to 180cm found here in 1981 when the construction held to spread a prison. There is a small museum which has replicas of mammy and some offerings. The explanation is Spanish only. Always the main gate is closed, knock the gate and call staff. 10mins is enough to look around.

Miculla Petroglyphs
Petroglifos de Miculla
The San Francisco de Miculla petroglyphs, are located in the altitude 1,200m. It is surrounded by an impacting desert vista combined with small hills and under the protection of two larger hills, Wawapas and Miculla. They are carved in low relief in the rocks with red rusts, and depict people fighting, dancing and hunting animals. Investigators believe that its age is somewhere between the time of the Tiahuanaco culture (500 A.D) and the years of 1100-1445 A.D. The complex covers and area of approximately 20km2. You can walk down the trekking route in the desert area, it takes 2.5 hours. On the way there is no sunshade either shop. Bring water with you.

Alto de la Alianza
El Alto de Alianza
The Alto de la Alianza is a historical monument and landmark, where a crucial battle on May 26, 1880 took place. Bolivian forces in alliance with Peruvian forces battled against the Chilean Army, finally Bolivians retreating to the highlands, and Peruvians forced north, losing strongholds in Arica and Tacna. It is considered a day of regional holiday in Tacna, and hold big ceremony to remember the day when many Peruvians and Bolivians died defending their country. That day begun a period called 'the captivity of Tacna' that lasted 50 years. There is a museum located northeast of Intiorko Hill on the location of the battlefield. We can see weapons of the time, guns, sabers, military uniforms, letters, documents, and a model of the battle.

8km from center of Tacna and takes 15mins. By taxi, go and back costs about S40. No public transportation. Few tourists visit there for your security, not to go alone. And bring water with you.


Hot Spring of Pachia
El Agua Caliente de Pachía
Placed on the shores of the Caplina River 1,400m high. There is a swimming pool and private hot spring for single or couple use for 30mins. They are known for their therapeutic properties for people suffering from neuro arthritic or skin disorders. The temparatures fluctuate between 36℃ and 39℃. After each use, hot spring space is cleaned up. And in the same location, there is a small hotel, restaurant and some small shops.

52km from center of Tacna, it takes 90 mins by local bus.

There is a popular beach for local people and Chilean. Located at the mouth of the Sama River, its beach is considered the best in Tacna since it is wide and flat with shallow water. Swimming season is from December to March. There have a party on New Year’s Eve with fireworks. In the surrounding areas, there are accomodations, restaurants and small shops.

You can see the great view of March and enjoy bird watching from observation platform. In the museum you can learn about the plants and animals of this area, Ite. And also there are some exhibition rooms of historical potteries. All explanation is Spanish only.

Ilo is a town of sea port. You can go small cruise tour from seaport with local boat for approximately 15 passengers. It takes 30 mins and could see seals. There are some souvenir shops which sell handy craft items in the pier. Along the shore you can see big wild seabirds.
135km from center of Tacna, it takes 2 hours. Local bus of Flores costs S12, departs each 1 hour.

Locumba is a small town which located in a valley of Locumba where cultivate wine and Pisco. From 1776, in September it held the Catholic festival.

They are notable for a number of rock paintings and found 1961. They are two small caves each 15 by 5 meters in size, with a depth of 5 meters. Their art painted in seven colors have the scenes depict armed men hunting the guanaco and Andean religious symbols.

You can see beautiful historical terraced field and enjoy trekking of good conditioned Inca-Trail. Center of the city there is a plaza, restaurant, small hotels and local shops. On the way to Tarata, there is an observation platform, which altitude 3,500m. 12km from Tarata, there is a hot spring of Ticaco which has five personal wells where the water is crystal clear and has a temperature of 49℃.
